Murray ruptures ankle ligaments!

It looked as though Andy Murray was leaving Miami on a positive note on Sunday evening. Despite his defeat by Machac, the former world No. 1 was quite satisfied with his tournament. We were also reassured after what we had thought was a simple scare, when the Briton collapsed in pain after twisting his ankle.

He was eventually able to resume the match and came very close to winning. More fear than harm, we thought at the time. But it was not to be. Murray revealed on his Instagram account that he had suffered a total rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and a near-total rupture of the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL).

Andy Murray: "Yesterday, towards the end of my match in Miami (against Machac), I suffered a complete rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and an almost complete rupture of the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). I'll consult an ankle specialist on my return to determine the next steps. Needless to say, it's a hard blow to take and I'll be out for a long time. But I'll be back with a hip and no ankle ligament when the time comes 😉"
