Camila Giorgi retires quietly

Camila Giorgi retires quietly

This is no ordinary way to end a career, to say the least. Camila Giorgi, former world number 26, has just retired. Without making any official announcement, as the information comes from the Italian federation, the former winner of the WTA 1000 in Montreal (2021) has put away her rackets.

At the end of a fine career in which she left her mark on the memory with an unreal Canadian week. At the Montreal 2021 tournament, Giorgi recorded victories over Elise Mertens (6-3, 7-5), Petra Kvitova (6-4, 6-4), Coco Gauff (6-4, 7-6), Jessica Pegula (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) and Karolina Pliskova in the final (6-3, 7-5). In addition to her unthinkable Montreal title, she will have reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon (2018) and the Olympic Games (2021). At 32, the Italian played her last career match on March 23 against Iga Swiatek (2nd round defeat in Miami, 6-1, 6-1).
