Thiem announces his retirement - The end of a career as prodigious as it was frustrating

We hardly dare believe it. Dominic Thiem will retire from the ATP circuit at the end of the 2024 season. The Austrian tennis prodigy has seen it all. From a discreet start to his career, to a lightning explosion making him the standard-bearer of a hungry "next gen", not to mention a tragic descent into hell, the former world number 3 has left no one indifferent.

Unable to return to the heights he left in 2021, the 30-year-old has finally come to terms with the fact that his body no longer allows him to play at the level that enabled him to make his mark on our sport's world stage. In a poignant video posted on Instagram, 'Domi' announced: "The 2024 season will be my last". Clearly deeply affected by this decision, the 2020 US Open winner humbly explained that he simply couldn't get over his terrible wrist injury (contracted in 2021). In all likelihood, 'Domi' intends to finish at home in Vienna.

This announcement is likely to create a flurry of tributes and regrets across the tennis world, given the immense popular support the 1.85m right-hander has always received. With other major players set to retire this year (Nadal, Murray, Gasquet, Cornet...), the end of a cycle for world tennis seems to be confirmed, and many tributes are likely to be reserved for the former world No. 3. Starting with the French Open, where it's hard to imagine him not receiving invitations.

He, as well as his father, truly believe he is better than he is. It would behoove him to learn some humility. As for his father...he should have cut that cord years ago.

No panic, no antics, no gamesmanship. Just game. So good to witness.
