Zverev pays tribute to Thiem:

Zverev pays tribute to Thiem: "He's one of the greatest champions we've ever known"

It's the event of the week: Dominic Thiem will soon be putting away his rackets. As we reported on Friday, in a video message posted on social networks, the Austrian announced that he would no longer be playing after the 2024 season. Since then, the entire tennis world has agreed to express its sorrow at the end of 'Domi's' career.

After making an entire generation dream, Thiem never recovered from the serious wrist injury he suffered in the summer of 2021.

This Saturday, it was Alexander Zverev who raised the Austrian's case in a press conference. The German, who is a good friend of Thiem's, paid tribute to the player. Having had several huge battles with the former world number 3, Sacha seems to want to retain only the positive: "It's strange, he's a bit my generation. It's a real shame that he's stopping because of injury, and not because he thinks he's played enough. We all know that the main reason is of course the wrist injury he's been struggling with for years. [...] The reality is that I'm losing one of my best friends on the circuit. He's one of the greatest champions we've ever known. He was one of the few who could beat the three best players in the world (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic)."

He probably did a lot more damage to his knee by popping all those magic pills & playing thru to the end of the match, if the truth be known.
