Musetti Could Withdraw from the Final 8: Another Blow for Italy Ahead of the Davis Cup?
Already without Jannik Sinner, Italy might also approach the Davis Cup finals without Lorenzo Musetti, who is exhausted from the many efforts made at the end of this season.
Currently competing at the ATP Finals, Lorenzo Musetti is digging deep into his physical reserves at the end of this season. Engaged in a race to qualify for the Masters for the first time in his career, the world No. 9 played the Athens tournament last week, where he reached the final against Novak Djokovic. Immediately after, the 23-year-old player continued with the Masters.
After his opening loss to Taylor Fritz, the Italian revived his chances of qualifying for the semifinals by defeating Alex De Minaur. On Thursday, he will face Carlos Alcaraz in an attempt to reach the final four.
However, the many efforts made by Musetti in recent weeks are starting to take a toll on his physical condition. Moreover, according to information from Sky Sports Italia, this season's Roland-Garros semifinalist is reportedly questioning his participation in the Davis Cup finals in Bologna next week.
According to the source, Musetti, who is leading his country in the Final 8 in Sinner's absence and was selected by his captain Filippo Volandri, is expected to make his final decision after his run at the ATP Finals ends.
If he withdraws, Lorenzo Sonego would be the frontrunner to replace him. It should be noted that, as of now, Musetti is part of the selected group alongside Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, Andrea Vavassori, and Simone Bolelli. Italy will face Austria in the quarterfinals.
