Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard didn't have an easy first round opponent in Brisbane, Nick Kyrgios.
The Frenchman got out of the trap, beating the Australian 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, in a duel of big servers.
Mpetshi Perricard hit 36 aces to 7 double faults.
In a post-match interview, he declared: "Facing Nick is complicated. I know that in three months' time he'll definitely be back.
My serve? I only work on it for about twenty minutes a practice. The rest is devoted to movement and the basics of tennis."
In the second round, he will face Frances Tiafoe, winner of Adam Walton earlier today.
