18 players ranked in the top 10 in 2025: a record matched on the ATP circuit in the 21st century

World tennis is undergoing a revolution: Sinner and Alcaraz dominate unchallenged, while the rest of the circuit wages a fierce war to exist. Between surprises and unexpected falls, 2025 will remain a year apart.

2025 has seen Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dominate the circuit head and shoulders above the rest. The two best players in the world are intensifying their rivalry, which is becoming increasingly visible in the major tournaments.

The gap in level between them and the rest seems to be widening day by day, and no player has been able to stand up to them throughout the season. Moreover, aside from the Italian and the Spaniard, the circuit is very homogeneous.

18 players in the top 10: 2025 follows in the footsteps of 2006 and 2008

Indeed, as Luca Brancher points out on X (formerly Twitter), 18 players have been ranked in the top 10 this year, which is a record shared with the 2006 and 2008 seasons in the 21st century.

Besides Sinner and Alcaraz, other players have managed to stay in the top ten from January to December: this is the case for Zverev, Fritz, and Djokovic. Currently, Auger-Aliassime, De Minaur, Musetti, and Shelton, who have had a good season, are in the top 10.

Draper, who had an excellent start to the year, closes out the current top 10. Some other players started the year well-positioned, but they were not consistent enough to keep their place: this is the case for Medvedev, Rublev, Tsitsipas, and Ruud.

Finally, Khachanov, Dimitrov, Rune, and Paul have also spent a few weeks in the top 10. Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Bublik both reached 11th place at different times, without ever appearing in the ATP top ten since the start of the season. An absolute record could therefore have been set, but ultimately, it was not.

As much as I love watching Alcaraz at his best, I'd love to see Alex taking this, he's such a tryer, and getting married and his humour and humility...

Favoritism?

Last year: Sinner seed 1, the organizers schedule Alcaraz on day 1, Sinner on day 2.

This year: Alcaraz seed 1, the organizers schedule Alcaraz on day 1, Sinner on day 3.

That means: 7 matches in 15 days for Alcaraz, 7 in 13 days for Sinner; and no rest day for Sinner between quarter and semis, 1 full day rest for Alcaraz.

Also, on the first very hot day, the organizers schedule Sinner...
