"A lot of people saw me as much stronger than I really was," Monfils reflects on the expectations placed on him

Despite reaching one semifinal and three quarterfinals at Roland-Garros, Monfils has often been viewed as a player who never truly fulfilled his full potential. During a podcast aired on Kevin Ferreira’s YouTube channel, the Frenchman addressed the high hopes people had for him:
"First, when people tell me I could have won Roland-Garros, I say: 'Thank you for thinking that.' That’s why I’ve always said: 'It’s incredible,' meaning that a lot of people saw me as much stronger than I really was.
So thank you, and sorry, because I’m much less strong than that. No, you shouldn’t put yourself down. Wait, guys, stop—I’m stronger than you. I know I’m stronger than a lot of people, but not those guys, and I’m not putting myself down, I’m just telling the truth."
Ranked world No. 6 at his peak, Monfils has won three ATP 500 titles, reached two Grand Slam semifinals, and three Masters 1000 finals in his career.
