"A mediocre season at best," Tiafoe honest about his 2025 ATP Tour year
After a promising rise, Frances Tiafoe is facing a challenging period in his career. Discussing his season, the American analyzes his difficulties and the challenges ahead.
Frances Tiafoe, world No. 29, continues to disappoint in this 2025 season. Still ranked 11th in the world just a few months ago, the American is currently on a streak of four consecutive defeats. His most recent loss came in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo against Marton Fucsovics (3-6, 6-1, 7-5).
A finalist in Houston and a quarterfinalist at Roland-Garros, Tiafoe has no standout results on the ATP Tour this year. The 27-year-old player reflected on his year so far and didn't mince words when discussing his current phase.
"It's a mediocre season at best. I've had some very tough losses, I've really struggled to string matches together, like the three or four in a row that you need to stay at the top.
And I also haven't had the excellent results that I'm used to having every year. I have the opportunity to finish strong and achieve some things, but, ultimately, this year has been marked by a lot of ups and downs.
A year ago, I was one set away from the US Open final. I think from that point, I needed to push forward, but I haven't played with enough hunger. You have to prove it week after week in tennis, and that's something I haven't done.
This year, I've played nervously, not at the level I'm capable of. I need to be consistent, fight for a full nine months, and see what happens. I need to be completely focused to see where that takes me.
The game is open, I have the ability to do better, and the most important thing for being consistent is simply to be obsessed. If you want to be really good, you have to be obsessed with the game, and it's that mindset that will take me very far," Tiafoe stated to Punto de Break.
