Alcaraz defeats Cerundolo and wins his first career match in Monte-Carlo
Making his first appearance since 2022, Alcaraz faced Cerundolo in his opening match at Monte-Carlo.
Despite a scare in the first set, the Spaniard dominated the next two to secure victory in three sets (3-6, 6-0, 6-1). His last match in the Principality dated back to a second-round loss against Korda (7-6, 6-7, 6-3).
"I wasn’t thrilled with my start, but I’m happy to have the win in the end. I was trying to find my rhythm, aiming to create slightly longer rallies.
It didn’t quite work—he was more aggressive. I played more aggressively in the second set with deeper returns and shots closer to the lines.
I tried to move forward more and come to the net. I hadn’t played on clay since the Olympics," he told Eurosport after the match.
He will face Altmaier in the round of 16.
