Alcaraz on his defeat in the Olympic final: "I felt like I let my country down"
Carlos Alcaraz was defeated last year at the Paris Olympics by a formidable Novak Djokovic, who was on a mission to claim the last major title missing from his impressive resume.
The current world No. 3 had succumbed after an epic final tie-break by Djokovic, who delivered unstoppable winning shots to secure the gold medal.
Before playing an exhibition match tomorrow in Puerto Rico, Alcaraz reflected on this painful defeat: "It was a tough moment because since the year began, my goal was to win the gold medal.
During the tournament week, I felt like I had to do it. But it's a bad idea to feel obligated to achieve something.
At that moment, I felt like I let my country down by not winning the gold medal everyone was expecting. That's why I couldn't hold back my emotions.
Speaking in front of the cameras, expressing myself at that moment, and showing the world and my country how I felt, I think it was necessary."
