Djokovic on his new coach: "I caught Murray off guard, he wasn't expecting it"
Andy Murray will be Novak Djokovic's new coach until at least the Australian Open. Officially retired from the courts since this summer, the Scot will be working with his friend and former rival on the ATP circuit.
The Serb, for his part, recounted the behind-the-scenes story of the first contact and admitted that Murray was very surprised.
"I was in the process of thinking about next season and what I needed at this point in my career.
I ended my collaboration in March with Goran Ivanisevic, with whom I've had a lot of success and with whom I've worked for years," the former world number 1 began for GB News.
"It took me six months to decide whether I needed a coach and, if so, what kind of coach I wanted.
With my team, we looked at several names and I realized that the perfect coach could be someone who has had the same experiences as me, i.e. a multiple Grand Slam winner and a former world number 1.
I thought of several people and Andy Murray was an idea that came up. I said to myself: 'Okay, I'll give him a call and we'll see how it goes. I caught him a bit off guard because he wasn't expecting it.
I'm still motivated to win Grand Slams and write the history of our sport.
That's one of the main reasons why I asked Andy to work with me. I still have big goals," concluded Djokovic.
