Quentin Halys gave Daniil Medvedev plenty of trouble. The Russian, in strong form at the start of the season, ultimately advanced to the third round of the Australian Open despite a labored start to the match.

The three-time Melbourne finalist prevailed in four sets (6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in 3:02), looking impressive in the later sets (he committed just one unforced error in the third).

Halys expressed some regrets in his press conference while praising the former world No. 1's level of play in the second half of the match.

'It's more like he raised his level'

'I double-fault at 40-0 (when he led 7-6, 2-1), but after that, I don't feel like I did anything horrible either. That's the game where he started striking the ball a little harder.

He also suddenly stood closer on return against my second serves. It was impressive, and I served a bit worse myself. But once again, I mainly have the feeling that it's him who elevated his game from that point on.

In any case, I don't think I completely missed the last three sets, and I even find the score a bit harsh. At the end of the first set, I thought there might be something to gain there.

'He gave nothing away in the last three sets'

But then he retrieves so many balls, he's so pesky with his backhand... And when he's on form, he makes very few errors—he gave nothing away in the last three sets.

I think he still put together a very good match and that I matched him. There were a lot of rallies that I usually can't sustain against him. I'm pleased with what I brought to the table today,' Halys said, according to comments gathered by L'Équipe.

Despite top-10 ATP rankings and consistent excellence, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gaël Monfils, Richard Gasquet, and Gilles Simon never claimed a Grand Slam title, enduring mockery from French media amid Big 3 dominance. A deep dive into a talented generation defined by sky-high expectations and brutal competition.

As much as I love watching Alcaraz at his best, I'd love to see Alex taking this, he's such a tryer, and getting married and his humour and humility...

Favoritism?

Last year: Sinner seed 1, the organizers schedule Alcaraz on day 1, Sinner on day 2.

This year: Alcaraz seed 1, the organizers schedule Alcaraz on day 1, Sinner on day 3.

That means: 7 matches in 15 days for Alcaraz, 7 in 13 days for Sinner; and no rest day for Sinner between quarter and semis, 1 full day rest for Alcaraz.

Also, on the first very hot day, the organizers schedule Sinner...
