Hong Kong WTA 250: Mboko Upsets Fernandez to Face Bucsa in Final
Victoria Mboko won the all-Canadian duel against Leylah Fernandez in Hong Kong, while Cristina Bucsa managed to fight her way through to the final.
The lineup for the final of the Hong Kong WTA 250 tournament is now set. Victoria Mboko will face Cristina Bucsa for the title. In the first match of the day, the Spaniard, who had benefited from Belinda Bencic's withdrawal in the previous round, this time dismissed Maya Joint (6-3, 6-1 in 56 minutes) and still hasn't lost a single set in this tournament.
The world No. 68 will thus play the very first final of her career, at 27 years old. In her attempt to put her name on a WTA tour trophy, she will have to overcome Victoria Mboko. The Canadian defeated her compatriot Leylah Fernandez (2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour 43 minutes).
The world No. 21 confirms her form after her victories against Talia Gibson, Alexandra Eala, and Anna Kalinskaya in the previous rounds. Winner of the WTA 1000 in Montreal this summer, the 19-year-old player will be competing to win her second career title.
Mboko and Bucsa faced each other in the first round of qualifying for the WTA 1000 in Rome earlier this season. The Canadian won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) and will attempt to repeat that performance this Sunday in Hong Kong.
