'I Don't Approve—She Consulted No One': Veronika Kudermetova on Sister Polina's Switch to Uzbekistan
Polina Kudermetova has turned her back on Russia. The world No. 167 announced her nationality change last December. Now, Veronika's younger sister will represent Uzbekistan.
The 22-year-old was one of many Russian players to opt for another citizenship in 2025. Maria Timofeeva and Kamilla Rakhimova have also decided to play for Uzbekistan. In an interview with local media Tatar, Veronika Kudermetova commented on her sister's choice.
“As a Russian athlete, it was hard for her to reach a high ranking”
“Frankly, it's a sensitive topic for me. I don't approve of her decision; she didn't consult anyone. It was a personal choice. I think her motivation for changing her sports nationality is both economic and tied to her desire to qualify for the Olympics.
As a Russian athlete, it was difficult for her to reach a high ranking. But as a member of the Uzbekistan team, she could reach third, or even second, in her country's rankings,” Kudermetova said, according to Tennis Up To Date.
