"I knew I was going to start getting better," Sakkari rejoices
Maria Sakkari has reached the quarterfinals of the Washington tournament after securing two impressive victories against Katie Boulter and Emma Navarro.
The Greek player has been going through a tough period since the premature end of her 2024 season at the US Open.
While she was in the Top 10 at this point in the year in 2024, she has now dropped to 90th place.
During a press conference, she expressed satisfaction with her performance in the American capital: "I've been working hard these past few months—not 12, but let's say 9, or actually 8 months since my return from injury around the same time last year.
I knew that at some point, I was going to start improving. Things were going well, but it wasn’t exactly what I wanted—though it’s a good start.
I had a feeling it would happen sooner or later. I’m really happy to be playing good tennis here in Washington because I love this surface. I feel like it really suits my game."
Sakkari will face Raducanu in the quarterfinals.
