I never imagined I could beat such a player," Bublik overjoyed after victory over Sinner in Halle
Alexander Bublik pulled off the day's biggest surprise in Halle by eliminating world No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner on German grass.
The world No. 45, who has been riding a wave of confidence since his Roland-Garros quarterfinal, also got revenge on Sinner after the Italian had abruptly ended his impressive Paris run.
In his post-match interview, he discussed his tactics for securing this prestigious win:
"Every time I step on court, I want to win. This time, it’s really special. I’d never beaten a world No. 1 before. Honestly, I never imagined I could defeat a player like Sinner. I tried to serve well and stay decisive.
I obviously had better chances here than at Roland-Garros. I focused on returning as many balls as possible and serving aces to keep the ball out of play. I know what I’m capable of, especially on a fast surface. He gave me an opportunity, and I hit a great forehand to break him in the third set.
After that, I just tried to hold my serve. On grass, if you lose your serve, things get tough. I’m not someone who loses serve often. I just wanted to keep serving and disrupting him. It worked perfectly.
