Jessica Pegula Opens Up: 'Playing Four Matches in Four Days Was a Physical Shock' — Her Season Already Under Strain
Beaten last week in the semifinals of the WTA 500 in Brisbane, Jessica Pegula started 2026 with an encouraging result. However, still a bit short physically to string matches together, the American preferred to withdraw from the Adelaide tournament.
"Playing four matches in four days was a physical shock"
She explained, in comments relayed by The Tennis Gazette, that her preseason did not allow her to be physically ready:
"I didn't have the best preseason due to several injuries. So I didn't have many positive days. Playing four matches in four days was a bit like a shock to my body.
It's also hot here. Even though it could be worse, starting like this under the Australian summer... This week (in Brisbane), my body gave out very quickly. But I'm happy I was able to play three tight matches with lots of points and tense moments."
