Juan Aguilera, Former Hamburg Masters 1000 Champion, Passes Away at 63

Sad news in the tennis world. Former Spanish professional player Juan Aguilera, who won five ATP titles during his career—including two in Hamburg—passed away on Tuesday, March 25, at the age of 63 after a long illness.
Aguilera reached his career-high ranking in September 1984. At the 1990 Hamburg Masters 1000, he delivered an exceptional performance, defeating Goran Ivanisevic, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Magnus Gustafsson, Guy Forget, and finally Boris Becker in a one-sided final (6-1, 6-0, 7-6).
His best Grand Slam result was a fourth-round appearance at the 1984 French Open, where he was eliminated by Mats Wilander. On social media, the X account (formerly Twitter) paid tribute to its former champion in recent hours.
"We are saddened by the passing of Juan Aguilera, a two-time Hamburg Open champion. He won the title in 1984 and 1990, defeating Boris Becker in the 1990 final with a remarkable 6-1, 6-0, 7-6 victory.
We will always remember his signature sliced backhand and his kind personality! Our thoughts are with his family and the tennis community," reads the social media post.
