Karolina Muchova Storms Back to Beat Maria Sakkari, Reaches WTA 1000 Final in Doha
For the third time in her career, Karolina Muchova has qualified for a WTA 1000 final.
The Czech player, who holds the highest win percentage among players yet to win a title in this category, had to overcome the obstacle of María Sakkari this Friday in the semifinals.
A Match Full of Twists and Turns
The match initially favored the Greek player. Despite conceding a break early in the match, Sakkari managed to reverse the momentum to take the first set (6-3). She even took a 2-0 lead in the second set before experiencing a clear lapse and conceding five consecutive games.
Her resurgence, erasing an initial break deficit, was not enough. Muchova came back to level terms to clinch the second set (6-4), before cruising in the third. The Czech player ultimately won 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in just over two hours of play.
In the final, the world No. 19 will attempt to secure the second title of her career (and the most prestigious) against the sensation Victoria Mboko. A promising matchup that should offer great entertainment on the court in Doha.
Sakkari Gains 19 Ranking Spots
On her side, Sakkari can still be satisfied with a successful week in Qatar.
After notably eliminating Paolini and Swiatek, the Greek player will make a significant climb in the rankings and will once again be near the top 30, at world No. 33.
