Mouratoglou explains Zverev's difficulties in Grand Slam finals: "In the important moments, he lacks audacity"
Patrick Mouratoglou continues to analyze tennis. As Naomi Osaka's new coach, the Frenchman is always watching the matches and, like all tennis fans, watched the Australian Open 2025 final between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.
At the end of the match, the Italian won his third Grand Slam in as many finals, while the German reached the same number of Major finals as his opponent, but with the same number of defeats.
Is it a problem of level or of mentality? Mouratoglou had this to say: if he wants to win a Grand Slam, the world number 2 will have to take more control of operations.
"I don't think Sascha lost this Grand Slam final because he didn't believe in it. In my opinion, quite the opposite is true, and he was a great believer in his chances.
But I think he's still missing a few things in his game. He's improved enormously, that's for sure. He's number 2 in the world now.
He's come back even stronger from his injury and added a lot of new things to his game.
On the other hand, in the important moments, he lacks audacity. He needs to be more aggressive, take more risks, take the match by the scruff of the neck and make the game his own.
He pushes himself to do it from time to time, but you get the feeling that it's not yet natural for him. He needs time. He needs to do it again and again and again to be more effective at this level," says Mouratoglou for The Tennis Gazette.
