Mouratoglou on Connors' Record: "Some Players Will Surpass 109 Titles"
While many records are made to be broken, some seem untouchable. The Big 3 (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) have shattered almost all marks in tennis history, but Jimmy Connors' record of 109 career titles remains, for now, out of reach.
Roger Federer came close (103), and Novak Djokovic just passed the symbolic milestone of 100 trophies this season. But the Serb, who will turn 39 next year, will likely need to stay on the tour for several more years to hope to surpass Connors.
"Some players, in the future, will be able to break this record"
In comments reported by Tennis365, Patrick Mouratoglou believes the record will eventually fall one day... but not thanks to Djokovic:
"I think Jimmy Connors' record will be broken. In fact, two players are not that far from it. Roger ended his career quite close to that total, and Novak is still playing and isn't very far either.
I don't think Novak will break it, because he is solely focused on Grand Slam tournaments, which would mean he would need to win six or seven more. That won't happen.
So Jimmy Connors' record won't be broken anytime soon, but I think one day it will fall. It's huge. It's a really high mark, but I believe some players, in the future, will be able to surpass 109 career titles."
For now, only Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner seem capable of aiming for such a record, with totals of 24 titles at ages 22 and 24.
