Musetti joins a very exclusive club regarding performances in major clay court tournaments in a single season
Lorenzo Musetti will play his first Roland-Garros semifinal on Friday afternoon. The Italian, ranked 7th in the world, defeated Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals (6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and now awaits the winner between Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul for a spot in the final.
In any case, with this victory over the American, Musetti has entered a very exclusive group of players who have managed to reach at least the semifinals of all prestigious clay court tournaments in a single season (the three Masters 1000 events—Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and Rome—as well as Roland-Garros).
Before him, since 1990, only Rafael Nadal (2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2019), Novak Djokovic (2008), Andy Murray (2016), and Alexander Zverev (2022) had achieved this feat.
This year, Musetti reached the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, where he lost to Alcaraz. He also made the semifinals in Madrid and Rome before being eliminated by Jack Draper and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively.
