Navarro ousts Osaka for an all-American quarterfinal clash in Bad Homburg
Emma Navarro holds her ground at the WTA 500 in Bad Homburg. The American, ranked 10th in the world, continues her run in Germany. After defeating Marta Kostyuk in the previous round (6-2, 7-5), the New York native confirmed her form in the round of 16 against Naomi Osaka.
The Japanese player, currently ranked 56th in the WTA, had eliminated Olga Danilovic in the first round (7-6, 7-6). This match against Navarro, who is gradually regaining her rhythm after a mixed start to the season, was a real test for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Despite firing nine aces in the match, the 27-year-old Osaka wasn’t solid enough on her service games and conceded three breaks in total. Confident and composed, the 24-year-old American wrapped up the match in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), securing her second victory in as many meetings against her opponent.
Last year, in the second round of Wimbledon, Navarro had already defeated Osaka in straight sets and now advances to the quarterfinals in Bad Homburg.
To secure a spot in the semifinals, she will have to overcome compatriot Jessica Pegula, who earlier in the day booked her place with a straight-sets win over Katerina Siniakova (6-2, 6-3).
