Nishikori withdraws from the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona
Kei Nishikori will not be in Catalonia next week. Although he was among the players invited by the organizers of the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona, the Japanese player, who recently climbed back to 65th in the rankings partly thanks to his final appearance earlier this season in Hong Kong, has ultimately withdrawn. The tournament takes place next week on Spanish clay.
A two-time champion in Barcelona in 2014 and 2015, the former world No. 4 retired in the second round of the Houston tournament a few days ago after losing the first set 6-1 to Christopher Eubanks.
Nishikori's withdrawal frees up two wild cards, which are expected to be distributed quickly by the tournament organizers and should be announced in the coming hours. The draw is scheduled before the end of the week in Catalonia.
