Pegula and Kostyuk Withdraw from Adelaide WTA 500 Ahead of Australian Open
The draw for the Adelaide WTA 500 was conducted this Saturday. Jessica Pegula, the defending finalist, was the No. 1 seed and could have faced Paula Badosa in the second round.
But the American, world No. 6, ultimately withdrew. Injured in the thigh during the Brisbane WTA 500, the 31-year-old had suffered a heavy semifinal defeat to Marta Kostyuk (6-0, 6-3).
Pegula thus prefers not to take risks one week before the Australian Open, host of the season's first Grand Slam. She fell in the third round to Olga Danilovic last year.
Kostyuk Also Withdraws from Adelaide
Speaking of Kostyuk, she has also pulled out. The Ukrainian, who had an exceptional week in Brisbane by knocking out three top 10 players (Anisimova, Andreeva and Pegula) to reach the final, will not play back-to-back tournaments in Australia.
The 23-year-old will thus fine-tune the final details of her Melbourne preparation on site. A quarterfinalist in 2024, Kostyuk exited the first Major of the year in the third round against Paula Badosa at the start of last season.
