Sönmez Makes History for Turkish Tennis at Wimbledon
One of the great stories of Wimbledon 2025 is Zeynep Sönmez. Ranked 88th in the world, the 23-year-old player secured her first two Grand Slam wins at the London Major.
After her first-round victory against Jaqueline Cristian (7-6, 6-3), the Turkish player delivered a strong performance to defeat Wang Xinyu (7-5, 7-5), the world No. 32 and recent finalist at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin.
Playing an excellent match, Sönmez—who has now opened her Grand Slam win tally—had previously suffered early exits at the Australian Open (defeated by Talia Gibson) and Roland-Garros (defeated by Elina Svitolina) earlier this season. But this week in London, she overcame both the Romanian and the Chinese player. These two victories further cement her place in Turkish tennis history.
Indeed, Sönmez has become the first Turkish player, male or female, to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era. It was a special moment for her, and she couldn’t hide her emotions after match point (see video below).
Looking to continue her impressive run, the Istanbul native will face either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Suzan Lamens for a spot in the second week. In a tournament full of surprises, Sönmez can dream of going even further at Wimbledon.
