Tomas Machac Stuns Ugo Humbert to Win Adelaide ATP 250 Title, Returns to Top 30
Ugo Humbert was on court this Saturday for the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide. Having delivered a flawless run up to that point, the Frenchman had defeated Térence Atmane, Tallon Griekspoor, Alexander Shevchenko, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the final. He lost only one set throughout his journey.
The 27-year-old player aimed to win the eighth title of his career against Tomas Machac. The Czech, ranked 35th in the world, had eliminated James Duckworth, Quentin Halys, Jaume Munar, and Tommy Paul on his side.
Like his opponent, he lost his first set of the tournament only in his semifinal. Humbert had a slight psychological advantage, having won the only previous encounter against Machac. That was in the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Tokyo in 2024.
Machac Triumphs in Adelaide and Makes His Return to the Top 30
The Frenchman actually started this match perfectly, breaking first to lead 3-0. But the Czech quickly corrected course and won six of the next seven games to take the first set.
The second set was more balanced, and neither player could make a difference on return. In the tiebreak, Humbert was more solid (7 points to 2) and forced a third set.
Machac, 25, accelerated in the middle of the deciding set and ultimately soared to victory after a final love break (6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in 2h23). He secures the second title of his career in three finals played, having already triumphed in Acapulco last year.
Tough First-Round Draws at the Australian Open for Humbert and Machac
The Czech climbs to 24th in the world rankings and gains full confidence before facing Grigor Dimitrov in the first round of the Australian Open. As for Humbert, he remains at 7 titles in 11 finals, but loses a second consecutive final after the one against Casper Ruud in Stockholm at the end of last season.
He will now have to face Ben Shelton right from his first match in Melbourne in a left-handed duel that promises to be exciting in the early days of the competition.
