TV Audience: The Final between Alcaraz and Sinner Creates a Sensation in Italy
For the much-anticipated return of Sinner after his suspension, the Italian public turned out in large numbers to attend the world number one's matches. While there were many spectators, there were just as many television viewers.
Indeed, in the tournament final pitting Sinner against Alcaraz, 46.4% of Italians in front of their screens watched the duel between the two best players in the world. This percentage represents 6,014,000 viewers. Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian federation, spoke about these figures:
"For me, it's a satisfaction to see tennis back on the first channel of public television, and I want to thank RAI for this. If we add the 392,000 paying viewers, we should see extraordinary growth, although I am beginning to think we are nearing the limit. The educational aspect should be further studied, by winning with champions on and off the field, boys who are an example for the new generations, who have values to pass on to the younger ones.
This social impact in this type of event is very important for Italy, even though the benefit could be greater if it were not for the odious exclusivity of pay television, which represents a serious economic disadvantage that we should study and quantify."
