Wawrinka Hails Bencic After United Cup Final Loss: 'Thank You for Making Us Better Players and People'
Belinda Bencic couldn’t prevent her team's defeat in the United Cup final against Poland, despite her impressive victory over Iga Swiatek. The Swiss star played all the singles matches as well as mixed doubles.
She won 9 of her 10 matches overall, with her only loss coming in mixed doubles against Poland's Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski. In his press conference, Stan Wawrinka—who had less success in the competition—paid heartfelt tribute to his compatriot.
In comments relayed by Punto de Break, he said: “More than an MVP, she has been the pillar of this team from the first day. She has been incredible on and off the court. Thank you for helping us become better tennis players and better people.”
