"We are still in the middle of the process," Yastremska withdraws from WTA 1000 Montreal due to visa issue
A standout performer on the grass-court swing, Dayana Yastremska has been competing in multiple tournaments ahead of Wimbledon. The Ukrainian, who reached the final of the WTA 250 event in Nottingham against McCartney Kessler last weekend, is playing in Eastbourne this week and made a strong start with a win over Magda Linette.
The Polish player, who had already lost to the world No. 42 in the Nottingham semifinals, retired after suffering a knee injury. While awaiting her Wimbledon campaign, the 25-year-old has already revealed her plans for the summer.
As the North American hardcourt swing (Canadian Open, Cincinnati, US Open) takes over from grass until September, the three-time WTA title winner has confirmed she will not compete in Montreal, which is hosting the women’s tournament this year, due to an administrative issue.
"I won’t be playing in Montreal. There are still doubts about the two tournaments in the United States because I don’t have a visa yet—we’re still in the middle of the process. So, we’re at the stage of resolving the issues with the U.S. visa. I hope everything works out and I can play the rest of the American swing," she told Tribuna.
Back in March, Yastremska faced a similar ordeal upon arriving in the U.S. ahead of Indian Wells, revealing she was nearly deported to Ukraine due to a lost passport that allegedly invalidated her visa under U.S. customs regulations. For now, her participation in the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati and the US Open remains uncertain.
