"We have enough guns to silence you": The chilling threats received by Roman Burruchaga at the Rosario Challenger
The Rosario Challenger is enduring a nightmarish week, marked by alarming incidents linked to sports betting.
After Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo was targeted with threats via messages and phone calls at the start of the tournament, finalist Roman Burruchaga has now been the victim of a similar episode.
According to revelations from journalist Sebastian Torok, the world No. 118 received several WhatsApp messages before his semifinal against Chun-Hsin Tseng.
"We have enough guns to silence you and your family"
Bettors attempted to force the player to intentionally lose to the Taiwanese player, accompanying their demands with explicit threats against Burruchaga and his family.
One of the messages received was unequivocal: "You son of a bitch, today you must lose against the Chinese player." Another went even further: "We have enough guns to silence you and your family. Don't get smart. Execute well, lose without winning a set and everything will stop there. Otherwise, I promise you won't leave Rosario."
These messages also contained personal information about his relatives, as well as a photo of a firearm.
Burruchaga ultimately won the match 6-3, 6-3 and will contest the tournament final against his compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
