WTA 1000 Madrid: Parry overcomes the qualification hurdle, Jacquemot misses the mark at the end of the battle
This Tuesday, the last two French women in the running for the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid were aiming for a place in the main draw. Early in the afternoon, Diane Parry confirmed her initial success against Oksana Selekhmeteva.
Against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked 87th in the world and a round of sixteen at the last Roland-Garros, the player from Nice did not falter and left her opponent with only scraps (6-2, 6-2 in 1h33 of play).
Meanwhile, Elsa Jacquemot, who had benefited from Anca Todoni's withdrawal the day before, faced Yuliia Starodubtseva, ranked 99th in the world, who eliminated Chloé Paquet in the first round of this qualification draw (2-6, 6-3, 6-0).
Although she seemed poised to avenge her compatriot for a long time, the world No. 143 ultimately cracked. Jacquemot lost the first set in a tie-break after more than 1 hour and 20 minutes but found the mental resources to easily win the second set.
The 21-year-old Frenchwoman even pulled ahead by leading 4-1 with a double break in the decisive third set, but the Ukrainian fought back and eventually turned the tables (7-6, 2-6, 7-5 in 3h20). Not helped by her service (9 double faults), Jacquemot may have regrets after coming so close to victory.
