Zverev on his Munich victory: "It's the most special thing I can do"
Zverev won the Munich tournament by defeating Shelton with a score of 6-2, 6-4. A two-time champion, the German added a third trophy to his collection on his 28th birthday. He also reclaimed his world No. 2 ranking, which he had lost to Alcaraz.
After his victory, the Australian Open finalist shared what winning in his home country—and on his birthday—meant to him:
"It’s extremely special. I’ve always loved winning tournaments in Germany. It’s probably the most special thing I can do. It’s definitely a big birthday present, let’s put it that way.
I knew I had to play my best tennis today. Ben played really well this week. The conditions suited his game because it was very hot and the court was really fast. To be honest, those conditions suit my game too. So I really enjoyed my birthday."
Set to compete at the Madrid Masters 1000, he will face Bautista Agut and Munar.
