Zverev reacts to Federer's criticism

On the sidelines of the Laver Cup, Roger Federer gave his opinion on Alexander Zverev's difficulties in winning his first Grand Slam title. The Swiss was critical of the German's state of mind, which in his opinion is not offensive enough to beat the best players in the big matches and thus win a first major title.

Zverev gave his point of view on the matter, not contradicting the words of the former world number 1 and holder of 20 Grand Slam titles.

Alexander Zverev: "It's nothing I don't know. That I didn't play the way I wanted to (against Taylor Fritz in the US Open quarter-finals) is absolutely clear to me. It was a horrible match on my part. That's why what Roger said is absolutely correct.

The world No.2 also took the opportunity to point out that the summer's numerous under-performances, including his own, were also due to an overloaded schedule as a result of the Olympic Games.

Zverev: "Maybe it was too much at one point. Not just for me. The US Open wasn't a tournament with results that were normal. With Carlos (Alcaraz), with Novak (Djokovic), with me too somewhere. There were a lot of defeats that weren't normal".
