SHAPOVALOV HOPES TO LEARN FROM BALL-SLAMMING INCIDENT AT DAVIS CUP
10 February 2017, 00:35
Denis Shapovalov says he wants to learn from the ball-slamming incident that led to an umpire being hit in the eye and his default during a Davis Cup match against Britain.

"I've been hit several times in the eye and other parts, so I know how dangerous it is," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I turned over and saw the official bending down, holding his eye. So from that moment on I was in complete shock."

He said he could not remember much from the next 10 minutes, but spoke to the umpire in the referee's office. The Canadian teenager was also apologetic that his default prevented the British team from fully enjoying their victory, and repeated that he was "very lucky" that the umpire had not experienced any significant injury.

Shapovalov wants to avoid similar shows of frustration.

"I'm hoping I'll learn from it,” the 17-year-old said.

The junior champion was playing in his second Davis Cup.
