Luciano Darderi claimed the Santiago crown with a composed 7-6(0), 7-5 victory over Yannick Hanfmann, needing one hour and 46 minutes to seal the title. The world No. 21 proved clinical in the first-set tiebreak and decisive in the late stages of the second set to deny his German opponent.
This triumph marks a significant rebound for the Italian, who suffered a defeat in a clay-court final against Francisco Cerundolo on February 15. Darderi’s path to the trophy highlighted his consistency, including a commanding semi-final win over Sebastian Baez, a player he also dispatched in mid-February.
Yannick Hanfmann, ranked No. 81, produced a stellar campaign to reach the championship match, notably upsetting world No. 19 Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets in the semi-finals. The German’s clay-court resurgence included convincing victories over Dusan Lajovic and Camilo Ugo Carabelli earlier in the week.
While Hanfmann’s form has improved significantly since his hard-court struggles in January, Darderi’s clay pedigree ultimately prevailed. The Italian has now won nine of his last ten matches on the surface, solidifying his reputation as one of the tour’s most dangerous competitors on red dirt.
