Raducanu edges ahead before bad light halts all-British semi-final

Published by , Saturday 06/15/24 16:43

Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu won a marathon tie-break to edge ahead of Katie Boulter in an all-British semi-final at the Nottingham Open before bad light halted play on Saturday.

The pair spent most of the day waiting for rain to clear before the match started soon after 6:30 pm local time (1730 GMT).

But only one set was possible before darkness, rather than a downpour, saw the match held over until Sunday.

Raducanu, in her first semi-final since stunning the tennis world by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam singles title at the 2021 US Open, won it 7-6 but only after taking a protracted tie-break by 15 points to 13 against defending champion Boulter.

The 21-year-old Raducanu was set to face Fran Jones on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the grass-court tournament -- a warm-up event for Wimbledon, which begins on July 1.

But her fellow Briton withdrew because of a shoulder injury.

Earlier in the day, Karolina Pliskova advanced into the semi-finals after defeating Tunisian top-seed Ons Jabeur, a fellow former Wimbledon finalist, 7-6 (10/8), 6-7 (3/7), 7-5 in a hard-fought contest.

The Czech will take on France's Diane Parry in the second semi-final on Sunday with the Nottingham final scheduled for later that same day.

@Daniel ... W intentionally slowed down the surface because the fans were tired of watching people with an excellent first serve walk through matches. Just like the FO started doing things, faster balls for instance, to speed up the game because fans get tired of watching one grinding long rally after another. In the old days before they had these super high tech rackets and strings they do today, it was more difficult to return first serves accurately and with any pace on a consistent basis, which allowed a serve and volley game to be a good strategy. Today's rackets allow players to essentially block the serve and still have control and enough pace that the server can't consistently serve and volley, as it's too high risk. Just look at the big servers we have today. Zverev and Tsitsipas on a good day, Hurkacz, Sheldon, Raonic back ... as soon as they run into a player with an excellent ROS the rest of their game is exposed. Tennis has evolved in part because of technology and in part because the sponsors want fans entertained to get more sponsors and ad revenue.

A lot of people could see Nadal's level had dropped off. The pundits had been saying for many years his style of play was hard on his body. As a result a lot of people were anticipating Nadal might retire, including me. Especially when he tied the then GOAT Federer and even more after he surpassed Federer's major total. So I have to agree with Fred, how is this a story ... except that Federer said it.

Andy has withdrawn, Most sensible decision he's made this afternoon, to be honest. Sad to see the match end this way. 😢

Andy is clearly struggling with an injury atm, so why carry on & aggravate it even more, especially with Wimbledon coming up 🤔
