French Open day 3: Who said what

Published by , Tuesday 05/28/24 20:29

Who said what on the third day of the French Open at Roland Garros on Tuesday:

"These colours? These colours I didn't choose. It was the brand who chose for me, so some other questions?"

-- Elena Rybakina responds to being asked about her outfit following an impressive first-round win.

"I didn't want to end my career with such a horrible defeat. But then when I had my first game, I managed to be back on track again. I still lost anyway. It's not like I won in any way, but it's better than 6-0, 6-0."

-- Alize Cornet on fearing a double bagel in her final match before retirement against Zheng Qinwen. The Frenchwoman lost 6-2, 6-1.

"Andy is the best. We're going to miss him a lot. His British sense of humour was amazing. Also the guy is such a character on court."

-- Daria Kastakina on former number one and three-time Grand Slam title winner Andy Murray who will call a halt to his career later this year.

"I think both me and my dad wanted to get some revenge on the Meligeni family. It was worth the wait, I guess. It was many years we had to wait, but we got it today."

-- Casper Ruud after beating Felipe Meligeni Alves in the first round. Meligeni Alves' uncle Fernando beat Ruud's father Christian in the Norwegian's only ATP final at the 1995 Swedish Open.

"I had my undershirt thermal layering on. I was ready for a battle in the cold and rain."

-- Australia's Alex de Minaur on playing in the chill of Paris.

"Safe to say that we don't take it too hard if either of us don't watch each other play because we obviously know that we're getting ready, we've got to recover, got to do stuff to focus on yourself."

-- De Minaur on tournament life with girlfriend and WTA top 30 player Katie Boulter

"I think it takes him a little longer time to get to his best level on clay than other surfaces, but he's a champion and he always find his best level when it matters. Honestly, you can never count him out. I wouldn't be surprised if he found his level again here."

-- Holger Rune on the dangers posed by Novak Djokovic.

Personally I still think Murray would be best just playing Olympics then pulling out of the rest of the year and trying to have a redo of the goodbye tour next year

Not that he was facing that stiff of competition, but after winning Eastbourne I wonder if Fritz, seeded 13th, actually has a better chance at going deep into W than 4th seed Zverev.

Glad Zverev has his self pumped up and hope he plays well and goes deep into the tournament. However, Sinner just won Halle, so he appears to be performing well on grass. Alcaraz not so much this year, but he did win W last year.

The stress of having points to defend is part of the mental aspect of tennis. In part because that affects your ranking and where you get seeded in future tournaments. Having the mental fortitude to deal with stress is part of the game. Some people were lucky and born with the temperament for that, others not so lucky.

With the joke draw he got (as usual in Wimbledon), he has the 25 in his bag.

Hardest QF definitely for Nole (out of top 4 seeds)
