'My body is not ready' says Zverev as he withdraws from Stuttgart

Published by , Tuesday 06/11/24 17:07

Alexander Zverev withdrew from the Stuttgart Open on Tuesday, with the Roland Garros runner-up citing fatigue after his French Open final.

The ATP number four was top seed at the German event which marks the start of the grass season transition prior to Wimbledon, which begins on July 1.

The German lost the Paris final after over four hours on court against Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

"I have played a lot of tennis in the last few weeks and reached the final in Paris, where I played five tough sets," Zverev said in a statement.

"I feel that my body is not ready to go from clay to grass now."

Zverev last competed in Stuttgart in 2019, losing his opening match to Dustin Brown.

Zverev was replaced in the Stuttgart draw by French veteran Richard Gasquet, who will play Brandon Nakashima after the American beat compatriot Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 on Tuesday.

I thought Dimitrov had the potential to be a consistent challenge to the top players when he was an 'up and coming' player. At times he played some very high level tennis, but not consistently, not most of the time. Being able to play at a high level consistently is a characteristic of the top players. For whatever luck of temperament one inherits to have the mentality to do that, it was clear Dimitrov, like most, didn't have it. Another characteristic is having the steely nerves to not choke when the pressure is on. To his credit, I though Dimitrov was going to choke at the end of the 4th set, but he didn't. But he did in the fifth. Seven or eight months to recover? That says a lot about Dimitrov.

Personally I still think Murray would be best just playing Olympics then pulling out of the rest of the year and trying to have a redo of the goodbye tour next year

Not that he was facing that stiff of competition, but after winning Eastbourne I wonder if Fritz, seeded 13th, actually has a better chance at going deep into W than 4th seed Zverev.

Glad Zverev has his self pumped up and hope he plays well and goes deep into the tournament. However, Sinner just won Halle, so he appears to be performing well on grass. Alcaraz not so much this year, but he did win W last year.

The stress of having points to defend is part of the mental aspect of tennis. In part because that affects your ranking and where you get seeded in future tournaments. Having the mental fortitude to deal with stress is part of the game. Some people were lucky and born with the temperament for that, others not so lucky.

It was a fantastic match and Grigor played extremely good at the time but the force that turned the match was very visual and spelled Nadal. Winning over Rafa in a slam has proven a near impossible ta

Berrettini is 5% of the old Berrettini from a few years ago. Anyone saying that Sinner got a hard draw is wrong. Berrettini may not even play against Sinner
