Key points of the French Open first round match between 14-time champion Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev at Roland Garros on Monday:
1st set: Zverev 6-3
-- Master of ceremonies Marc Maury delights the crowd with his lengthy rundown of each of Nadal's French Open winning years. There are 14 of them, so the roll call takes a little while.
-- However, chants of "Rafa, Rafa" under the Court Philippe Chatrier roof are quickly silenced as Nadal is broken to love in the first game.
-- Zverev stretches to a 3-1 lead, saving two break points.
-- Nadal saves two set points on his own serve at 3-5 but gives up the opener on the third when he buries a loose forehand into the net.
Key stats: Zverev hits 15 winners to Nadal's five
2nd set: Zverev 7-6 (7/5)
-- Nadal saves two break points to go to 2-2, celebrating his winning forehand with a leap, punch and scream of "Vamos!"
-- He then breaks for first time to lead 3-2 courtesy of a pinpoint drop shot with Zverev stranded at the back of the court.
-- Nadal is then broken to love in the 10th game as he serves for the set. In the stands, camera pans to defending champion Novak Djokovic, the man responsible for two of Nadal's three defeats at the tournament before Monday's clash. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are also in the stands.
-- In a tense tie-break, Nadal saved one set point but Zverev claimed the set when the Spaniard netted a service return.
Key stats: Zverev came out on top after a 19-shot rally to edge a crucial 5/3 lead in the breaker
3rd set: Zverev 6-3
-- Nadal breaks and holds before again undoing his hard work in the third game.
-- In a marathon 13-minute fifth game, Nadal has to save four break points to edge ahead 3-2.
-- The effort was proving too much and Nadal was broken again as Zverev moved to 4-3, backed up to 5-3.
-- It's all over when Nadal fires a weary forehand long and wide.
