Berrettini skips French Open

Berrettini skips French Open

Back from injury this season, the Italian has had an up-and-down season. After a Challenger final in Phoenix (beaten by Borges, 7-5, 7-6), the former world no. 6 missed his return to the main circuit, beaten by Murray in the first round of Miami. Taking to the ochre, he bluffed his way to the title in Marrakech. Now back in the world's top 100, Berrettini has hardly played since. After arriving in Monte-Carlo drained, he lost his last competitive match, defeated by Kecmanovic (6-3, 6-1).

Since Monaco, the Italian colossus has been trying to get back into top physical condition. While he does not appear to be suffering from a serious injury, it would appear that he is proceeding extremely cautiously to avoid a relapse. So, a few hours before the draw, the man who reached the quarter-finals in 2021 announced that he would not be playing at Roland-Garros.

With the grass-court season approaching, Berrettini's surface of choice, he has clearly decided to take his time in order to be competitive. The 28-year-old declared on his social networks: "Despite increasingly intense training sessions, my team and I feel that I'm not quite ready to string together several five-set matches. I'll wait a little while before making my return to grass. Thanks for all your support. I'm almost there, I just need a little more time."
