Humbert outclasses Van de Zandschulp to reach third round in Madrid

Humbert outclasses Van de Zandschulp to reach third round in Madrid

Over time, Ugo Humbert has learned to tame clay. Very shaky on the surface in his early years, the Frenchman is winning more and more. Winner of two challenger titles on ochre in 2023, the world No. 15 continues his rise to prominence.

After an excellent tournament in Monte Carlo (beaten in the quarter-finals by Casper Ruud), the French No.1 got his Madrid tournament off to a perfect start. Facing Bottic Van de Zandschulp, the Messinian made life easy for himself. Winning in just 1h18 of play, he took full advantage of his opponent's inaccuracies to qualify for the rest of the tournament (6-3, 6-3).

In the third round, he will face the winner of the duel between Jaume Munar and Jan-Lennard Struff. A match that promises to be far more difficult.

With an excellent clay-court win ratio since 2023 (over 70%), could Humbert be the man to make the French public dream at Roland-Garros?
