Sinner ends French hopes at Roland Garros
Jannik Sinner has just qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2024 French Open. He dominated Corentin Moutet, the last Frenchman in the men's draw, in 2 hours, 41 minutes and four sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1). After an hour of play, the Italian found a solution to his problems and then completely dominated the rest of the match.
Moutet's game plan was very clear on Sunday evening on Court Philippe Chatrier: create surprise and uncertainty at every moment. He played more atypical tennis than ever, linking slices, drop shots and lobs. This tactic worked perfectly in the first set, which the Frenchman could even have won 6-0 (he had 2 set points at 5-0). But Sinner gradually adapted and finally found the key.
From 2-2 in the 2nd set, the balance of power was completely reversed. Moutet's variations were no longer able to destabilize the Italian, who took control of the match. What followed left no doubt as to the outcome of the confrontation, leaving the Frenchman lost, frustrated and, above all, without a solution. An hour and a half later, the world No. 2 (he'll be No. 1 if he reaches the final or if Novak Djokovic doesn't) prevailed on his opponent's last fault, without really having given himself a fright.
The world No.2 will face Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday in a bid to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. As for Moutet, this defeat does not call into question his superb run in Paris, especially as it enabled him to secure his ticket to the Olympic Games.
