Exhausted, Gaël Monfils was unable to go all the way against Ben Shelton in the last 16 of the Australian Open. Trailing 2 sets to 1 and broken in the 4th set, the Frenchman decided to retire.
At 38, Monfils was coming off a title in Auckland and three excellent victories at the Australian Open.
Shelton declared in a post-match interview: "I've watched Gaël since I was a kid. I've always said he's the one with the best highlights video.
I hope that at his age I'll be able to do some of the things he does.
The Grand Slams are real physical tests. I feel good, I'm in good shape physically.
Shelton will face Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals.
