After struggling for more than a set, the world No.2 needed two and a half hours to beat Barbora Krejcikova (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) in her first group match.
Absent since her quarter-final defeat at the US Open, Iga Swiatek came within three games of losing her first match at this 2024 Masters, trailing the Czech 6-4, 3-0.
But this was without counting on a comeback by the Pole, who finally found her feet and was able to unleash her tennis after winning the second set.
This victory keeps her in with a chance of finishing the year as world No.1, should Aryna Sabalenka fail to win two more matches at the event.
