Dimitrov confides: I had moments of severe anxiety and panic attacks.

A finalist in Stockholm last week, Grigor Dimitrov was asked in a press conference to broach the subject of mental health. The Bulgarian, currently world no. 9, confided in us about his own experience, revealing that he himself had struggled to deal with his relationship with professional tennis.

He explained that he had suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks, sometimes in the middle of a match. He also took the opportunity to encourage all athletes to speak out on the subject (video below).

Grigor Dimitrov: "It would be wrong to say that I've never suffered. I've experienced moments of anxiety and panic attacks, even during tennis matches. I think it's always good to talk to people and share our experiences, even if it's with another tennis player.

We really should be more open with each other. I know it's difficult, especially in such an individual and brutal sport. But in the end, we're all human and not that different from each other. We're just lucky enough to play tennis well.

I see that many athletes around the world are starting to speak out, and it's wonderful to see, especially with several NBA players talking openly about their mental health. We don't talk about it enough.

I totally understand that, from my point of view, men in general don't often dare broach this subject. Yet it's essential not to hold back. It's not a weakness; on the contrary, showing your vulnerability is an immense strength. It's a real strength, without a doubt. As a man, I'm very proud of that."
