Elena Vesnina, former Olympic gold medallist in doubles, announces her retirement
This time, it's the end. After announcing her retirement in 2021 due to maternity, 38-year-old Elena Vesnina posted a lengthy message on her Instagram account in recent hours.
The Russian, ranked 13th in the world in singles and number 1 in doubles, will not be returning to the circuit and has confirmed her retirement.
"Thank you to this wonderful sport. I've learned so much about myself, the world and met so many incredible people during my career, all thanks to tennis," Vesnina begins.
"I'd like to thank my husband, my family and my friends for their unconditional support. They've always been with me.
Thank you to all my coaches, partners, fitness trainers and everyone else who has made me a better athlete and person.
Thank you to my doubles partners and colleagues for the beautiful moments and memories shared on the court. Finally, thank you to all my fans. I will miss you all."
In total, Elena Vesnina will have won twenty-two titles (three singles and nineteen doubles), including the women's doubles event at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Ekaterina Makarova.
