In a heated atmosphere, Zverev ends Fils' run in Paris
Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters 1000 after a very close match against Arthur Fils won in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).
In the first set, the two men were neck-and-neck, but the German broke at the best of times (4-4) following a unforced error by the world No. 20.
Annoyed, the Frenchman was close to conceding at the start of the second set, but his first service point made the difference, saving a break point.
He then took advantage of Zverev's poor play to take his serve and win the second set with authority.
At 2-1 in the deciding set, the German made the break that gave him the lead.
Despite a very tense final game in which Fils was awarded three break points, the world No.3 finally came through with a winning serve.
In the quarter-finals, he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas for their third meeting of the year.
