BJK Cup - Italy takes the lead in the final after first singles!
Opposed to the surprising team from Slovakia, Italy won the first singles of the Billie Jean King Cup final thanks to Lucia Bronzetti's victory over Viktoria Hruncakova (6-2, 6-4).
In a match played in front of a large number of Italian fans, it was the Transalpine team that led 1-0 at the end of the first singles of this final. Bronzetti, ranked 78th in the world, was the logical favorite against her Slovakian opponent, who is ranked over 200th in the world.
After an exchange of breaks at the start of the match, the Italian took the lead to win the first set 6-2.
In the second, Hruncakova had two opportunities to lead 5-2, but Bronzetti held on to win the next four games and bring her team the first point of the final.
Italy is now in a strong position to challenge for the title, as the second singles match will pit Jasmine Paolini against world No. 43 Rebecca Sramkova.
